"Nyack
Hospital is the only hospital in the region where we are able to
look at the fetus using Magnetic Resonance (MR). This is an invaluable
tool in helping us detect small problems before they become big
ones."

When
it comes to looking at and analyzing a sonogram or MRI, the most
important tools in the diagnosis of disease and other medical problems,
patients want only the most highly qualified experts to tell them
what they see. That's why at H.V.R.A., all the radiologists are
board certified and fellowship trained, many in exacting sub-specialties
like maternal fetal imaging.
The radiologists at H.V.R.A. are the only ones in Rockland County
accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound. Accreditation
guarantees that the physician sonologists and ultrasound technicians
are the best trained, most up-to-date imaging experts you can find.
These are experts who maintain their ongoing medical education and
have proven themselves at the top of their field in image production
and interpretation. Imaging is only one component of patient care.
The Maternal-Fetal Imaging Division of H.V.R.A. works closely with
the obstetricians, perinatologists and other health care providers
involved in patient well being.
"We offer a full range of ultrasound services including routine
and high-risk maternal fetal imaging. Any soon-to-be mother, but
especially those with high-risk pregnancies, should know that H.V.R.A.
centers are the very best places to be tested," said radiologist
Dr. Daniel Cohen. In addition to routine ultrasound, H.V.R.A. radiologists
offer genetic (Level II) obstetrical ultrasound, fetal cardiac ultrasound
and amniocenteses. "High-risk imaging can be very valuable to patients
who have prior pregnancies affected by fetal malformations, chromosomal
abnormalities or recurrent pregnancy loss," said Dr. Cohen. "Women
with current pregnancies that are affected by diabetes or high blood
pressure also need to be aware of the importance of ultrasound monitoring.
"At Nyack Hospital, problematic pregnancies are evaluated not only
by routine ultrasound studies, but also through specialized studies
of blood flow through the umbilical cord and certain blood vessels
within the fetus. "We are specialists in unusual fetal problems,"
said Dr. Cohen. "Nyack Hospital is the only hospital in the region
able to look at the fetus using magnetic resonance (MR).
Another helpful use of ultrasound is the detection of ovarian cancer.
Dr. Cohen says, "Hands-on scanning combined with a fund of knowledge
gleaned from years of clinical and pathological follow-up make color
Doppler ultrasound a clinically useful tool."
Another important area concerns a common problem: women with unscheduled
bleeding or spotting. Radiologists' endovaginal ultrasound expertise
helps a woman's doctor decide whether she needs an office biopsy,
dilation and curettage (D and C), or no biopsy at all.
"Every study we do," says Dr. Cohen, "applies the experience of
handling the imaging of over 10,000 obstetrical and gynecological
patients a year. That's something you just can't get everywhere."
