X-Ray:

No special preparation for this exam.

Fluoroscopy:

GI / Small Bowel Series:

Your stomach must be as empty as possible. You must not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum, or take any medication after midnight the night before your exam. You may brush your teeth, but avoid swallowing water.

DURING YOUR UPPER GI EXAM

Prior to your exam, you will be asked to change into a gown. In the examination room, the technologist will explain the procedure to you and help position you behind the x-ray machine, called a fluoroscope. He or she will give you some liquid barium and another mixture to drink which will enable the radiologist to see your digestive tract.

GallBladder Series:

Patient will need to pick up pills at the office. Follow instructions on package. Exam takes 30 minutes (3-day exam).

Barium Enema (BE)/Air Contrast Enema:

Call the office for specific instructions. Exam takes 1 hour.

It is normal for the barium to discolor your stools for a few days.

It is important to drink plenty of water for two days after your exam to avoid constipation which may occur following this exam.

Please feel free to bring a light snack to eat after your exam, especially if your are diabetic. You may resume your regular diet immediately unless you have been instructed differently by your physician.
