All ultrasound exams of the abdomen require you to have nothing to eat or drink for 6 to 8 hours prior to the exam. Pelvic Ultrasounds: Drink four eight-ounce glasses of water one hour prior to the exam and not void until after the exam. Arms, Legs and Neck Ultrasound: Requires no special preparation. Exam Day: Arrive early to complete the registration process. The technologist will come and escort you to the dressing room, where you will change into a patient gown. Once inside the exam room, the technologist will explain the exam to you and answer any questions you may have. To begin the exam, you will be asked to lie down on the table while the technologist applies a small amount of gel to the area that is to be scanned. The technologist will use a transducer, moving it across the area to be examined while applying mild pressure. The exam may take anywhere from 30 minutes up to an hour to complete. After the exam, the technologist will assist you off the table and you will be free to change and leave. The results of your exam will be forwarded to your healthcare provider, who will explain them to you. Some pelvic exams require transvaginal examination. Prostate ultrasounds require cleansing enemas and images will be obtained transrectally. If you are pregnant, be sure to inform your healthcare provider and our schedulers. |
